The Department of Transportation Services celebrates Safety Month in October (also National Pedestrian Safety Month) with group rides, giveaways, fun events and tips to help Terps stay safe while getting around campus.
Review the safety guidelines for driving, biking, scooting and walking on campus. Drivers should check the campus bike lane guidelines before you hit the road. And take the pledge to share the road.
It all begins 11:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. Tuesday at the southwest entrance to the Adele H. Stamp Student Union, where Terps can grab a free helmet or water bottle.

Smoothies and Safety with the Fire Marshal
Wednesday, Oct. 14: 11 a.m.-1 p.m., Farmers Market
Grab a free smoothie and chat with UMD Fire Marshal Alan Sactor. Learn more about lithium-ion batteries used in devices including e-micromobility vehicles and how to keep them safe and in good condition.
Be a Bike-Friendly Driver
Thursday, Oct, 15: 2-4 p.m., Lot 9b
Stop by for a commuter snack and tips on navigating alongside our campus bike lanes.
Bicycle Skills Class
Wednesday, Oct. 21: 4-7 p.m., Lot 4j
Learn to navigate the roadways and trails around campus with the experts from the Washington Area Bicycle Association! This class is perfect for those who are still a bit wobbly on a bicycle and who seek hands-on guidance to pedal with confidence. All ages and abilities are welcome. It’s never too late to learn a new skill! Loaner bicycles and helmets available with RSVP. RSVP required.
Roll to the Polls
Thursday, Oct. 22, 5:30-6:30 p.m., DOTS front lawn
Want to skip the lines on Election Day? As Early Voting kicks off, enjoy a beginner-friendly bike and scooter ride to the College Park Community Center, an early voting site for Prince George's County registered voters. Registration is required; loaner bicycles and helmets are available with RSVP. Free tire patch kits will be distributed.
Fall Foliage Ride/Lantern Making
Thursday, Oct. 29, Noon-1 p.m. (crafts), 1-3 p.m. (ride), DOTS front lawn
BikeUMD, biodiversity expert Juanita Choo and the LBGTQ+ Equity Center host a beginner-friendly bicycle ride around campus to learn about the flora and fauna that surround us. Before the ride, enjoy an optional meetup with icebreakers and crafting. All wheels are welcome. Registration is required; loaner bicycles and helmets are available with RSVP.
