Crews Restore Power to Campus

Facilities Management crews at the University of Maryland completed restoring power on Tuesday to all buildings following a campuswide outage that began on Saturday due to an underground fault. 

Operations returned to normal on Wednesday, with the exception of a small number of courses that were relocated; students and instructors were notified directly.

The electrical fault occurred in a manhole near two buildings undergoing scheduled maintenance. While UMD's looped electrical system allowed Facilities Management to isolate the fault and restore power to much of the campus within 24 hours, repairs required thorough testing and extensive safety precautions to support safe operations. 

Student Affairs and Academic Affairs staff orchestrated changes and contingency plans for summer activities with the safety and security of the campus community in mind. Facilities staff are continuing to monitor and test the electrical system and building operations.
