College of Information Studies to Be Renamed College of Information

By Mia Hinckle

The University of Maryland College of Information Studies announced Friday that it will officially be renamed the College of Information on June 1.

The name change to the College of Information, informally the INFO College, reflects a lengthy collaboration between students, faculty, staff, alums, board members, donors and partners. It stems from a strategic vision to better communicate the college’s mission and scope, and to align more closely with modern nomenclatures within the information field.

“As the field of information rapidly expands, so has and will the INFO College,” said Dean Keith Marzullo. “The name change to ‘College of Information’ reflects who we are today—a vibrant hub of education, research, and collaboration that spans our many diverse areas of expertise.”

The college is a leader in library and information science, cybersecurity, data science and visualization, archives, human-computer interaction, AI and machine learning, information justice, social media, online communities, gaming for education and more.

INFO harnesses the power of information and technology to advance social good, by not only studying the use of information, but also by building systems and technology, advancing policy and designing interventions.

The transition will happen visually in August across the college’s website, print materials and physical spaces.
