Athletics Training Suspended After 46 Terps Test Positive for COVID-19

By Maryland Today Staff

Terps athletics training has been suspended after on-campus COVID-19 screenings by the University Health Center on Monday and Tuesday returned 46 positive results for 501 student-athletes tested, affecting 10 teams, Maryland Athletics announced this evening. The suspension is a precautionary measure pending the results of a screening scheduled for Sept. 8.

“As we experience an unprecedented year in college athletics and across the entire country due to the COVID-19 pandemic, we continue to keep the health, safety and welfare of our student-athletes and staff first and foremost,” said Athletic Director Damon Evans. “The most recent testing results have revealed an uptick in positive tests among Maryland student-athletes. Out of an abundance of caution, we are temporarily pausing all workouts for our programs. We continue to educate our student-athletes and staff about best practices and protocols to be safe this time. We look forward to when our student-athletes can safely return to workouts and then restart their seasons.”

In all testing of athletics to date, 2,191 tests have yielded 63 positive results. In order to protect student-athlete privacy, Maryland Athletics will continue to publicly release aggregate test results at regular intervals.

Maryland Athletics, as part of a gradual, phased approach to athletic training and competition, is working with the University Health Center to conduct regular COVID-19 testing. The department worked with state, county and university health officials to develop appropriate protocols in the event of positive test results, including education, contact identification and tracing, and self-isolation.
