The advisory committee formed to review the implementation of reforms on procedures and protocols related to student-athlete health and safety and the culture of the football program met yesterday to discuss the athletic department’s progress to date.
Chaired by former University System of Maryland Chancellor William E. “Brit” Kirwan, the committee reviewed its objectives as well as support services for student-athletes, leadership development and next steps.
“There has been substantial progress in implementation, and the work is still ongoing,” said President Wallace D. Loh. “The paramount imperative is the safety and well-being of our student-athletes, and this advisory committee will help monitor and provide feedback on the implementation of recommendations.”
Joining Kirwan on the committee are Rear Adm. Michael Bernacchi; Mary Sue Coleman, president of the Association of American Universities; Vernon Davis, Washington Redskins player; Nick Hadley, UMD faculty athletic representative and professor of physics; and Amy Perko, chief executive officer of the Knight Commission on Intercollegiate Athletics.
