Associate Dean of Libraries Appointed Interim Dean

By Maryland Today Staff

Senior Vice President and Provost Jennifer King Rice sent the following email to university leadership and Libraries staff on Monday afternoon:

You are all aware that much-celebrated Dean Adriene Lim has a retirement date fast approaching on June 30. As we wish her well in this new chapter, I recognize the critical need to keep our Libraries running smoothly and for staff to receive the support they need to fulfill this critical function of our academic and research missions.

I am grateful that Daniel Mack, associate dean of libraries for collection strategies and services, has agreed to serve as interim dean of libraries from July 1-Oct. 1. Associate Dean Mack currently leads policy creation and implementation, strategic planning, program development and assessment for library collections.

He has advanced degrees in library science and ancient history and has taught college courses in ancient history, Roman archaeology, classical literature and Latin grammar. His scholarship includes work as co-editor of the Association of College and Research Libraries’ monograph Interdisciplinarity and Academic Libraries, as consulting editor for Brill's New Pauly: Encyclopaedia of the Ancient World, and as series editor of the American Library Association’s Publications in Librarianship Series.

This appointment of our valued colleague will help aid the transition of the new dean once the search concludes. I remain committed to selecting a new dean who can build on the strengths of the Libraries and lead them to even greater prominence. Our next dean will provide leadership and vision that is consistent with our new campus strategic plan and continue to encourage effective collaborative partnerships that serve the public good.

In the meantime, we will continue our diligent work in finding a permanent leader, and I thank each one of you, as well as Associate Dean Mack, for your service.

Sincerely,

Jennifer King Rice
