A ‘Home-in-one’ for Scholarship-Winning Caddies

University of Maryland officials joined with the Western Golf Association (WGA) and Evans Scholars Foundation (ESF) on Monday to dedicate the Caves Valley Evans Scholars Scholarship House in College Park.

Supported by the WGA, which conducts championships for professional and amateur golfers, the ESF provides college scholarships for high-achieving students with limited financial means who work as caddies across the United States. This year, the ESF counts 1,260 Evans Scholars at 27 universities nationwide.

The UMD students who will call the new College Avenue residence home earned ESF scholarships by virtue of their academic success in high school and through years of working as caddies at Caves Valley Golf Club in Owings Mills, Md., or surrounding clubs in the Baltimore metropolitan area. University of Maryland College Park Foundation trustee Gary Attmann ’76 serves as chairman of the Caves Valley Golf Club Foundation and has been an advocate of bringing the partnership to UMD.

The first class of Evans Scholars arrived at the University of Maryland in 2021. For the 2025-26 academic year, 21 students will be moving into the residence, which promises to foster community, leadership development and academic support.

“In the four decades since I left College Park, no story has consistently owned my awe like the Evans Scholars stories,” said sportscaster Jimmy Roberts ’79, who served as master of ceremonies for the dedication. “Since 1930, the Evans Scholars Foundation has sent more than 13,000 of these deserving young people to college. They haven’t just written a check, though. They’ve supported their hopes and dreams and created a legacy of excellence.”
