Craig Beyrouty

Dean Beyrouty is a powerful advocate for the vital role of research, education and community outreach within multiple cross-cutting initiatives of the agriculture and natural resources fields. Throughout his career, Dean Beyrouty has emphasized the importance of protecting and strengthening the land-grant mission of various institutions, and is continuing that important work at the University of Maryland. Beyrouty, who became dean of UMD’s College of Agriculture and Natural Resources (AGNR) in 2015, oversees the College’s diverse on-campus departments and programs, serves as director of the college’s statewide non-formal educational outreach system, University of Maryland Extension, and as director of the Maryland Agricultural Experiment Station, which operates four research and education centers located across the state.

He has been involved in teaching, research and extension for more than 40 years. He joined the University of Maryland from Colorado State University, where he served as dean of the College of Agricultural Sciences. Previously he held positions as professor and head of Agronomy at Purdue University and professor at the University of Arkansas. He has led and participated in research, teaching and administrative activities all across the world, in places such as Ethiopia, Japan, India, and Russia, among many more. His expertise is in Soil Chemistry and nutrient management with a research focus on plant nutrient uptake and phytoremediation of pollutants. Prior to pursuing graduate studies, he mapped soils for the U.S. Soil Conservation Service and was a research scientist for Castle and Cooke Foods.

Beyrouty is a fellow of the Soil Science Society of America and the American Society of Agronomy.
