Below are awards and honors University of Maryland faculty and staff have earned since mid-April:

The Adele H. Stamp Student Union marketing team of Eva Tennant, Whitney Schepf and Bree Caudill won the Association of College Unions International’s Steal This Idea Marketing Design Excellence Awards in multiple categories.

Rajshree Agarwal, the Rudolph Lamone Chair of Strategy and Entrepreneurship and director of the Ed Snider Center for Enterprise and Markets, was inducted into the Academy of Management Fellows and selected for appointment to the Federal Economic Statistics Advisory Committee.

Reggie Andrews, a multi-trades chief in Residential Facilities, earned his Certified Educational Facilities Professional credential, which represents a mastery of professional expertise.

Michelle Appel, assistant vice president for institutional research, planning and assessment, received the Association for Institutional Research’s 2024 Outstanding Service Award.

The U.S. Department of Commerce awarded a 2024 President’s “E” Award for Export Service to Rebecca Bellinger and Kislaya Prasad at the Center for Global Business. The center was recognized for significant contributions over the past four years to expand U.S. business in international markets.

Bioengineering Professor William E. Bentley, director of the Robert E. Fischell Institute for Biomedical Devices and the Maryland Technology Enterprise Institute (Mtech), received the Amgen Biochemical and Molecular Engineering Award. It recognizes research excellence and leadership in biochemical and molecular engineering. He also received the 2024 Professional Impact Award in Mentoring by the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering for inspiring creativity and leadership among graduate students, postdocs and early-career faculty.

Marinel Benyarko-Martinez, coordinator for curriculum, training and development in the Stamp Student Union, was awarded the 2024 Doctoral Student Award by the National Association of Student Personnel Administrators’ Latinx/a/o Knowledge Community.

Computer science Associate Professor Abhinav Bhatele, who has an appointment in the University of Maryland Institute for Advanced Computer Studies, received the 2024 Early Career Academic Achievement Alumni Award from the University of Illinois computer science department.

Mechanical engineering Professor Hugh Bruck received the 2024 C.E. Taylor Award from the Society for Experimental Mechanics for his technical contributions in image correlation development; material characterization for biosystems, metals and advanced composites; and service to the society.

Greg Berkowitz, director of trademarks and licensing in the Office of Marketing and Communications, received the National Campaign Marketer of the Year award from the Collegiate License Company.

Margrét Bjarnadóttir, associate professor of management science and statistics, was awarded the Knight’s Cross of the Icelandic Order of the Falcon for her research and “transformative approach to pay equity.” It is the highest honor the Icelandic state can bestow upon individuals based on merit.

Andrea E. Brown, associate professor of music and associate director of bands, was among the directors nationwide invited to a 180-member Collegiate Mass Band that performed at ceremonies and parades in Normandy for the 80th anniversary of D-Day.

Journalism Professor DeNeen Brown won a Salute to Excellence Award from the National Association of Black Journalists for her Guardian podcast episode, "Cotton Capital: The Sea Islands."

Tara Brown, associate professor in the Department of Teaching and Learning, Policy and Leadership, received Urban Education’s annual Kofi Lomotey Outstanding Reviewer Award.

Professor Natasha Cabrera in the Department of Human Development and Quantitative Methodology was named the editor of Monographs of the Society for Research in Child Development by the Society for Research in Child Development.

Executive producer and biology Professor Sean Carroll was part of the team that won a Peabody Award for the documentary film "All That Breathes," which follows two brothers working to save the black kite bird from the rising environmental toxicity in New Delhi.

Allison Chartrand, a postdoctoral associate at the Earth System Science Interdisciplinary Center, was selected for the American Geophysical Union’s 2024 Voices for Science program.

Naomi Cohen, TerpsVote coordinator, was appointed to the Students Learn Students Vote National Advisory Board.

The Department of Residential Facilities' Housekeeping program achieved the Cleaning Industry Management Standards accreditation from the Cleaning Management Institute, acknowledging the program's adherence to the highest administrative, operational and outcome standards in the industry. Only 13 universities across the United States have achieved this accreditation.

Dining Services was named Best Overall Food Allergy Program for Universities in a nationwide competition by MenuTrinfo. It recognizes the staff’s work in keeping 1,600 students who self-reported requiring accommodations and many other guests safe from food allergies and intolerances.

The Maryland Dairy, part of Dining Services, was awarded a commendation by the Maryland Secretary of Veteran Affairs for exceptional craftsmanship and dedication to the veterans, service members, and families of the state of Maryland. Its custom flavors include Fearless Veteran: mocha ice cream with cookie dough and a chocolate swirl.

Laxman Dhulipala, assistant professor of computer science, was awarded the 2024 Paris Kanellakis Theory and Practice Award for contributions to algorithm engineering, including several frameworks that revolutionized large-scale graph processing on shared-memory machines.

Kuishuang Feng, an associate professor in the Department of Geographical Sciences, was honored with the International Fellow Award from the University of Adelaide in Australia.

The Society for Prevention Research Early Career Preventionist Network awarded family science Associate Professor Jessica Fish the 2024 ECPN John B. Reid Early Career Award in recognition of contributions to advancing the field of prevention science.

Sylvester James Gates Jr., Clark Leadership Chair in Science, Distinguished University Professor and Regents Professor, was awarded an honorary doctorate of science during Harvard University’s Commencement exercises. Gates holds a joint appointment in the Department of Physics and the School of Public Policy.

Reza Ghodssi, Herbert Rabin Distinguished Chair in Engineering in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, received the 2024 AVS Gaede-Langmuir Award recognizing pioneering research on developing novel MEMS processes, fabrication and technologies for micro, nano and bio-devices and systems and their momentous impact on small-scale power, optical and biomedical applications.

Bruce Golden, the France-Merrick Chair in Management Science, was designated a fellow of the International Federation of Operational Research Societies.

Alexey Gorshkov, a fellow in the Joint Center for Quantum Information and Computer Science (QuICS), won the 2024 Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Photonics Society Quantum Electronics Award.

Assistant Clinical Professor of education Amy Green was appointed to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association's Marine Fisheries Advisory Committee.

Nathan Hultman, public policy professor and founder and director of the Center for Global Sustainability, was invited to join the U.S. State Department as distinguished senior advisor for climate ambition, a six-month role that will conclude in January 2025.

Diana Marsh, assistant professor of archives and digital curation, and Eric Hung, adjunct lecturer in the College of Information, were members of a multi-partner team that received the Society of American Archivists’ 2024 Archival Innovator Award for its project, “The Indigenous Archival Training Program.”

Taylor Jimeson, director of membership for the Alumni Association, was elected president of the Council of Alumni Marketing and Membership Professionals' board of directors.

Kate Juhl, senior program director of the University Career Center for the College of Arts and Humanities, received the Eastern Association of Colleges and Employers’ Tribute Award. It recognizes members who have consistently impacted and made lasting contributions to the association.

Math Associate Professor Adam Kanigowski was awarded the 2024 European Mathematical Society Prize, presented every four years to esteemed mathematicians aged 35 or under who work in Europe or are of European nationality. Kanigowski, who was born in Poland, is the first UMD faculty member to receive the honor.

Susan Kern, associate professor and director of the historic program, was awarded the William Seale Short-Term Fellowship, a month-long research fellowship at the Winterthur Museum and Library in Winterthur, Delaware.

Alireza Khaligh, professor of electrical and computer engineering, was elected a 2023 fellow by SAE International (formerly the Society of Automotive Engineers) in recognition of his achievements and leadership in the field of electrified transportation systems.

Melanie Killen received the Distinguished Contributions to Development Science Award from the Jean Piaget Society.

Dennis Kivlighan, professor of counseling psychology, received a Fulbright Global Scholar Award, which allows U.S. academics and professionals to engage in multi-country, trans-regional projects.

Distinguished University Professor of psychology Arie Kruglanski will receive the 2025 William James Fellow Award, which honors Association for Psychological Science members for a lifetime of significant intellectual contributions to the basic science of psychology. He also received the Association for Psychological Science’s William James Fellow Award, honoring members for a lifetime of significant intellectual contributions.

The Tissue Engineering and Regenerative Medicine International Society, Americas Chapter awarded bioengineering Associate Professor Catherine K. Kuo its 2024 Education, Training, and Outreach Award for her contributions to education, mentorship and public science communication in the field.

Jaehwa Lee, associate research scientist at the Earth System Science Interdisciplinary Center, received NASA’s Robert H. Goddard Award for Science in recognition of his contributions to aerosol research, specifically, his outstanding contributions to the development and enhancement of aerosol remote sensing algorithms.

Jioni Lewis, associate professor in the Counseling Psychology Program, was awarded fellow status for Division 35 (Society for the Psychology of Women) and Division 45 (Society for the Psychological Study of Culture, Ethnicity and Race) of the American Psychological Association.

Hui Liao, the Long Jiang Endowed Chair in Business, and her co-authors won the Organizational Behavior Division Best Meeting Paper Award of the Academy of Management for their paper "Visible from Afar: Remote Employees’ Collaboration Responsiveness to Managerial Requests."

Professor Catherine (Chengchu) Liu, principal agent with the Maryland Sea Grant Seafood Technology Extension Program and University of Maryland Eastern Shore Extension, was elected into the 2024 class of Institute of Food Technologists fellows, one of the most prestigious distinctions in food science.

Dinesh Manocha, Paul Chrisman Iribe Professor of Computer Science and Electrical and Computer Engineering, and Distinguished University Professor, is a 2024 inductee into the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers’ Visualization and Graphics Technical Community Virtual Reality Academy, in recognition of his fundamental contributions to computer graphics and computational geometry for VR.

The Office of Marketing and Communications won four 2024 Circle of Excellence awards from the Council for the Advancement and Support of Education. Terp magazine won silver in the category of Alumni/General Interest Magazines (printed three+ a year). Terp Creative Director John Consoli took bronze in Photography: Portraits. Maggie Haslam won silver in the category of Writing | News/Feature (Less than 1,000 words) for a Maryland Today article. Members of the Creative and Marketing teams collaborated with the Alumni Association on its "There's a Terp for That" program, which won bronze in Engagement | Volunteer Engagement.

Jean McGloin, professor in the Department of Criminology and Criminal Justice, was named a 2024 fellow of the American Society of Criminology, recognizing her scholarly contributions to the field and distinction in the discipline.

Journalism Assistant Professor Christoph Mergerson won the Promising Professor Award from the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication's Mass Communication & Society Division. It recognizes excellence in teaching by junior faculty members and graduate students.

Bioengineering Assistant Professor Erika Moore was named a 2024 TED Fellow, the first UMD faculty member with that distinction. The TED Fellows program supports early-stage innovators in expanding the impact and reach of their ideas. Moore is one of 11 individuals selected from more than 6,000 applicants.

Assistant Professor Catherine Nakalembe of the Department of Geographical Sciences was awarded a fellowship by the Carnegie African Diaspora Fellowship Program. She will be analyzing flood impacts on agricultural lands in Nigeria’s Niger River Basins.

Journalism Professor Deborah Nelson and the team of journalists behind the Reuters project “The Bat Lands” won the 3M Truth in Science Award as part of the Online Journalism Awards. The interactive project explores how intrusion into bat habitats worldwide could lead to future global health crises.

Peter Noonan, principal of McInturff Architects and professor of the practice, won two AIA Potomac Valley Design Awards and a Home & Design 2024 Excellence Award.

School of Public Policy Professor Susan Parker was recently invited to become a faculty affiliate with the Abdul Latif Jameel Poverty Action Lab, a global research center focused on reducing poverty through evidence-based policy informed by research, outreach and training.

Assistant Research Professor Adrian Pascual in the Department of Geographical Sciences was presented with the Outstanding Doctoral Research Award from the International Union of Forest Research Organizations.

Kalia Patricio, associate director of administrative operations in the Adele H. Stamp Student Union, was elected chair of the Council of University System Staff.

Devon Payne-Sturges, professor in the Department of Global, Environmental, and Occupational Health, won the 2024 Homer Calver Award from the APHA Environment Section, which recognizes national leaders in environmental health.

Margaret Pearson, the Dr. Horace E. and Wilma V. Harrison Distinguished Professor in the Department of Government and Politics, was named a non-resident senior fellow at the Brookings Institution.

Veronica Perrigan, director of engineering career services, was selected for the Hire Big 10+ Career Services Supervisor Award.

Patty Perillo, vice president for student affairs, was recognized with the John L. Blackburn Distinguished Pillar award by the National Association of Student Personnel Administrators Foundation, its highest honor.

Martin Perrine, a senior faculty specialist at the Earth System Science Interdisciplinary Center, received the Robert H. Goddard Honor Award for Science in recognition of his engineering elevating science missions at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center.

Rebecca Ratner, the Dean’s Professor of Marketing, is president-elect of the Association for Consumer Research.

Assistant Professor Rachel Romeo in the Department of Human Development and Quantitative Methodology received the Flux Society’s Young Investigator Award.

Rebecca Ryan, program director at the University Career Center for the College of Computer, Mathematical, and Natural Sciences received the HireBig10+ Career Consortium Outstanding Career Services New Professional Award.

Aerospace engineering Assistant Professor Umberto Saetti was awarded the 2024 Dave Ward Memorial Lecture Award from the Aerospace Control and Guidance Systems Committee.

Counseling psychology Associate Professor Delida Sanchez was awarded fellow status for Division 17 (Society for Counseling Psychology) and Division 45 (Society for the Psychological Study of Culture, Ethnicity, and Race) of the American Psychological Association.

Debra L. Shapiro, Dean's Chair in Organizational Behavior and Clarice Smith Professor of Management, received the Academy of Management Learning & Education Decade Paper Award for her 2013 paper “Scholarly Impact: A Pluralist Conceptualization."

Geographical sciences Professor Kathleen Stewart was voted president-elect of the University Consortium for Geographic Information Science.

Ichiro Takeuchi, professor and interim chair of the Department of Materials Science and Engineering, was elected a 2024 fellow by the Materials Research Society, in recognition of his leadership in developing combinatorial and high-throughput methodology, incorporating machine learning for exploration and discovery of new functional materials; and inventing and developing elastocaloric cooling.

Health policy and management Professor and Center for Health Equity Director Stephen B. Thomas was selected as senior adviser for community engagement at the National Institute on Drug Abuse Intramural Research Program to co-create innovative strategies aimed at building trust with populations that have historically been underrepresented in clinical research.

University Libraries' User Services and Resource Sharing Director Hilary Thompson received the 2024 Distinguished Achievement in Access Services Award from the Access Services Conference. She was recognized for her leadership, commitment to staff development and service to the profession.

A. James Clark School of Engineering Senior Lecturers David Tomblin, director of College Park Scholars’ Science, Technology and Society program, and Nicole Mogul, assistant director of the program, won an honorable mention for their paper presented at the American Society for Engineering Education’s annual conference in the Liberal Education and Engineering & Society division. The paper empirically explored skills and mindsets for activating undergraduate engineering student agency to shape their engineering education experience.

Associate Professor of school psychology Cixin Wang received the Asian American Psychological Association's Distinguished Contributions Award.

Janelle Wong, a professor of government and politics, was inducted into the American Academy of Political and Social Science as a W.E.B. Du Bois fellow. She was one of eight scholars to receive the honor.

Hana Zewdie, coordinator for multiracial and transracial adoptee student involvement and advocacy, received the Collaboration Award from the Multiracial & Transracial Adoptee Network of the American College Personnel Association.

Hannah Zierden, assistant professor of chemical and biomolecular engineering, was named the 2024 Outstanding Young Engineer by the Maryland Academy of Sciences and Maryland Science Center, in recognition of her advancements toward specialized nanotechnologies for female reproductive health.
