Chioma Njoku M.S. ’25 spins faster and faster in the throwing circle before finally releasing the hammer and sending it soaring, a blend of elite athleticism and an elegant dance.

Each of those motions is a feat of physics, explains Peter Shawhan of the University of Maryland’s Department of Physics, as the hammer reaches speeds of up to 56 mph, with 300 pounds of pulling force needed to keep it going in its circular path.

He explains the science behind Njoku’s success as she prepares to compete in the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Eugene, Ore., on Thursday afternoon.
