# Quantum Physicist Elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences

Hill III (below), a professor in the Institute for Physical Science and Technology, was recognized for his groundbreaking research last week when he was announced as one of 269 new members of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.*

A University of Maryland quantum scientist is among the 269 artists, scholars, business leaders and others elected to the [American Academy of Arts and Sciences](https://www.amacad.org/new-members-2023), one of the nation’s oldest and most prestigious honorary societies, the academy announced Wednesday.

Wendell T. Hill III, a professor in the [Institute for Physical Science and Technology](https://ipst.umd.edu/), was recognized for his groundbreaking research focused on laser-matter interaction under extreme conditions—ultra-fast, ultra-intense and ultra-cold.

“We are proud to see one of our longtime faculty members, Dr. Hill, honored by the American Academy of Arts and Sciences for his trailblazing record of academic accomplishments,” said [Amitabh Varshney](https://cmns.umd.edu/people/amitabh-varshney), dean of UMD’s [College of Computer, Mathematical, and Natural Sciences](https://cmns.umd.edu/)(CMNS).
