# Grand Challenges: Global FEWture Alliance

Globally, around a billion people have difficulty accessing enough food, or the energy needed to power their homes and businesses. Another 2 billion struggle with shortages of safe water. The problems are worsening as the world heats up and its population expands.

From Baltimore neighborhoods to Nepal and Tanzania, the members of the[ Global FEWture Alliance](https://globalfewture.umd.edu/) apply their multidisciplinary expertise to health and environmental challenges at this food-energy-water (FEW) nexus.

Projects include harvesting rainwater for urban agriculture, using energy-efficient water treatment methods and converting landfill waste into clean energy—scalable solutions that aim to build healthier, more sustainable communities.
