Five University of Maryland faculty have been newly chosen as fellows by the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), the world’s largest general scientific society and publisher of journals such as Science.

Maryland Athletics announced the launch of Terrapin Club+, a new online streaming platform featuring exclusive video content and programming for Terrapin Club members. Terrapin Club+ (TC+) debuts today with a free preview of two shows: “The Johnny Holliday Show” and “Behind the Play.” 

Football Team Resumes Practice, Prepares to Play Indiana on Saturday

The Maryland football team will resume practices today in preparation for Saturday’s game at Indiana. It will be the first game since matchups with Ohio State and Michigan State were canceled amid a surge of positive COVID-19 test results within Maryland Athletics earlier this month, including for Head Coach Michael Locksley.

Football Game vs. Michigan State Canceled After Locksley, Others Test Positive for COVID

Maryland Athletics today canceled Saturday’s scheduled football game against Michigan State following new positive test results for COVID among student-athletes and staff, including Head Coach Michael Locksley. The game will not be rescheduled, with the announcement following the cancellation of last Saturday’s Ohio State matchup after earlier positive tests.

Plans for On-Campus Dining Throughout Thanksgiving Break Announced

Dining Services said today that it will open a dining hall for the duration of Thanksgiving break, as well as serve a traditional holiday meal, to safely accommodate the estimated 1,200 students who will be staying on campus. The Diner in the Ellicott Community will welcome students on dining plans and with Dining Dollars as it offers a limited menu each day, Tuesday, Nov. 24 through Saturday, Nov. 2.

Jalen Smith Selected 10th Overall in NBA Draft

The Phoenix Suns selected Terps All-American forward Jalen Smith with the 10th overall pick in the first round of the 2020 NBA Draft Wednesday evening.

Men’s Basketball Big Ten Schedule Announced

The Big Ten Conference on Wednesday announced the Maryland men's basketball team's 2020-21 schedule, featuring home-and-home league matchups against No. 7 Wisconsin, No. 24 Rutgers, No. 25 Michigan, Purdue, Minnesota, Penn State and Nebraska.

The First Year Book Committee is accepting nominations for the 2021-22 First Year Book. As with all past First Year Books, the committee is looking for texts that relate to current events and important issues for the University of Maryland community to discuss.

Good Neighbor Day, Returning in Hybrid Format, Seeks Volunteers

University of Maryland geographers are investigating how sea ice is rapidly disappearing in the Arctic by using the latest satellite-based technology to measure detailed changes in individual melt ponds, ridges, cracks and floes.

Pop-up COVID-19 Testing Site to Be Held Friday in College Park

The Prince George’s County Health Department will host a pop-up mobile COVID-19 testing site behind the Hotel at the University of Maryland, 7878 Diamondback Drive, from 9-11 a.m. Friday. No appointments or insurance is needed, but identification is required. Walk-ups and drive-through clients are welcome. Anyone with health insurance must present an insurance card, but there will be no out-of-pocket cost or copayment regardless of insurance status.

The cooler temperatures will keep us indoors more often, our immune systems will be tested by the traditional flu season, and all of us face the fatigue of the pandemic’s seventh month.

Athletics Releases One Maryland Mobile App

Maryland Athletics, in partnership with sports software company FanThreeSixty, yesterday launched the One Maryland mobile app, a one-stop shop for all things Terrapin Athletics, including the latest news, schedules, rosters, stats, scores and content from all 20 sports programs. 

Temporary Salary Reduction Plan Amended to Exclude Sponsored Awards

President Darryll J. Pines sent the following email to faculty and staff this afternoon: Today, I write to you with an update to the previously announced budget mitigation plans aimed at lessening the financial impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on our university. Upon a review of the temporary salary reduction portion of the mitigation measures, we are implementing a revision to exclude any portion of salary supported by sponsored awards.

University of Maryland Astronomers Find X-rays Lingering Years After Landmark Neutron Star Collision

A new start-to-finish view of a neutron star merger—the most complete such process ever observed—rewrites the way scientists understand these events. A UMD-led study of the event was published today in the journal Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society. In the three years since the landmark detection of a neutron star merger from gravitational waves, an international team of researchers led by University of Maryland astronomer Eleonora Troja has been continuously monitoring the subsequent radiation emissions.

Big Ten Adjusts Football Schedule; Homecoming Game Moved to Oct. 30

The Big Ten Conference announced the first week of the 2020 football schedule with dates, times and television coverage in addition to selected Friday games for the season. Maryland opens the 2020 season at Northwestern at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 24, a game that will air on the Big Ten Network. It will be the Terps’ first-ever trip to Ryan Field in Evanston, Illinois.
